Marine Surveyor:
"An experienced knowledgeable person qualified to inspect vessels for condition or damage.  While some marine surveyors are self-employed, or independent, others may be in the employ of a vessel company or an insurance firm.  The surveyor may be employed to negotiate terms with a shipyard for repair costs, or or hired to conduct the oversight of a salvage operation or oil spill, or to testify as an expert witness in a collision case, or a variety of oversight examinations which the surveyor has expertise. A surveyor may gauge barges to attest to their draft and estimate the tonnage onboard, as well as examine vessels for cleanliness and cargo suitability."
